I am looking for a video light. any advice?
Leann
The cute little flashlight type ones -- I think they're from Sunpak -- are great! Roberts camera in Indy has them!

Steven,

You can get a Bescor video light with Barn doors, stick it on a monopod with an adapter and then all you need is a small battery pack.

Steven,

Can you give a little more info? How are you planning on using the video lights?

I'm interested in this too. Also interested if there are any tutorials online for using video lights for stills.

We just go the Lowel id light with a bescor battery pack. It's a great light. We've done two B-sessions (3-day extended session) and we like the light a lot. It's focusable as well as dimmable. We also opted to get the barn doors as well, but havent really used them yet.

I have seen Frezzi's in action and they are pretty sweet. They have accessories too...barn doors and softboxes.

I just saw Bambi Cantrell using one of these a few nights ago at a seminar; they're fantastic for controlling/feathering the light both through the barn doors & the dimmable option. Definitely going on my list for purchase later this year!

I saw Bambi and Jerry Ghionis using the lowel ID light also and it rocks. I just added it to my gear. Will be using it as well.

I sure like the price better on that one....but it's neither dimmable nor battery operated. sad.gif I think for studio work or in a small room, it would be fine, but on location, I think being plugged in all the time makes it less versatile.

Any idea what video light he was using in this one? It looks small and battery operated which is what I would like.

I've heard of some inexpensive oones that are rechargeable - anyone heard of something like this?

no fraid not... pity im really interested in the idea of using a continuous light source when time is tight instead of faffing around with strobes.

I asked Jason Groupp this very same question of the video light we were using. I was in New York for the REVOLUTION workshop and we used this video light. The Lowel id-Light, Focusable & Dimmable 55 Watt Tungsten Camera Top Light 12/14v; with 4-pin XLR Connector. The Bescor NMH-54XLRA Side Kick Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) Battery will do the job or anything with XLR connectors will do the job for power. It allows you to get some sweet light.

::DUMB QUESTION ALERT::

What is a video light? I think I have a clue...

What are the uses for a video light? Receptions, night shots??

Is this a substitute for pocket wizards and strobes or does this supplement your lighting equipment?

Is it a standalone thing or does it go on your camera?

Please share any photos you have....

Take a look at this thread too for info on video lights. smile.gif

Video lights are just continuous lighting Theres lots of different types about now from tungsten, which I use, to LED and florescent but theyy all do the same thing. The ones I have are battery powered but you can get mains operated for studios. They are useful for all types of work you just have to remember they don't operate at the same colour temp as your strobe so you may choose to correct this in PP. The big advantage, I find, is they are more controllable and can be more subtle than a strobe. Being continuous, what you see is what you get when you look through the viewfinder. I don't use them on camera i use a mono pod or stand but they will fit on your camera although tungstens get very hot. I use these in place of a strobe and sometimes with a strobe mainly for night or low light portraits. One advantage is you don't have to wait for recycle. Disadvantage is they get very hot and eat battery's and are relatively low power.

Here's my story...and here's the details and partslist....

What about using a handheld spot light like a deer shiner? I'm from wisconsin and they're everywhere! i can see using it at a wedding reception to mimic video light and affordable? Any Comments on this idea?

the Sony HVL-LBP ... is an amazingly versatile light ... has built in barn doors, spot or diffused options and doesn't require a battery pack. It costs a pretty penny but you pay for the portability and versatility.
